Abstract

The article examines the key problems of municipal solid waste management in the Republic of Kazakhstan and develops possible recommendations for addressing them. The relevance of the study is explained by growing volumes of waste generation, insufficient levels of sorting and recycling, and problems in the collection, transportation and landfilling of waste. Particular attention is paid to developing the waste sorting system, expanding the recycling of secondary raw materials, improving infrastructure and strengthening state regulation. Based on the analysis of approaches and problems, the article concludes that a comprehensive, multifactor approach is needed, covering economic and environmental as well as technological and organisational factors. According to the Bureau of National Statistics, in 2021-2025 the volume of municipal waste increased by 36.4%, while the volume of sorted waste grew by 28.8%, so the share of sorting fell from 29.7% to 28.1%. The results show the need to develop separate collection infrastructure, recycling capacity and public environmental awareness together in order to reduce the burden on landfills.
